There is A LOT of unqualified advice and content out there about how to use poles exercises for horses. Some content is flashy with pretty set-ups and fancy arenas, but all of the horses are diving through the forehand, too fast and heavy in the contact. I coach and train pole work differently. The way I use pole work is to help the horse unlock its natural movement while being ridden. AML poles patterns are designed to help mobilise, strengthen, straighten and balance the horse while training them to focus and think more about how they move. AML patterns and exercises are also designed to help the rider find their ‘feel’. It used to be a universal consensus amongst coaches that we couldn’t train ‘feel’. I have found that certain poles patterns and exercises, ridden in a certain way, dramatically improve the horse riders ‘feel’. If you’re not sure what ‘feel’ is, it’s when you intuitively and subconsciously know how to use your aids with precise timing, so the horse responds in the way you as the rider desire.

Do You Lack Confidence, Suffer Anxiety or Worry Too Much About Falling Off Your Horse?

Did you know lacking confidence, suffering anxiety or fear of falling can be connected to your horse riding position? If a horse rider is a bit wobbly or unbalanced in the saddle it can cause the subconscious to believe the rider is not safe. Adrenaline floods the brain, the horse rider’s heart rate can elevate, nerves can cause physical reactions like trembling and holding one’s breath. None of these are desirable behaviours while riding a horse.

Over time I developed a six week training program, focussing on improving horse rider’s position and balance to directly improve confidence in the saddle.
